Best Korean Cica Cream (6 with the 마데카소사이드 Framework)

By Yuna Choi··7 min read

Six Korean cica creams reviewed by madecassoside concentration and use case — Skin1004, Round Lab Pine Cica, Purito, COSRX, VT Pink, Etude Soon Jung. Plus what cica actually does (and doesn't).

The Best Korean Cica Cream (Six, With the 마데카소사이드 % You Should Actually Look For)

The Korean cica cream category is one of the most crowded in K-beauty — every third product on the Olive Young sensitive-skin shelf carries "cica" in the name, and readers can't tell which are legitimate madecassoside-focused formulations versus centella-extract creams wearing cica marketing. The naming problem is worth unpacking because it affects what you're actually buying. 시카 (cica) is technically the madecassoside-isolated form of centella; 센텔라 (centella) is the whole-plant extract. Brands blur this constantly. If you want the calming benefit cica is famous for, you need to look past the label word.

I'm Yuna, ex-formulator from a Seongnam R&D lab. I panel-tested centella and cica formulations for two years and can tell you from the inside: the difference between a well-formulated cica cream and a decorative one comes down to whether the brand publishes the madecassoside percentage. Here are six Korean cica creams organized by what they actually do.

What Cica Actually Means

시카 (cica) — shorthand derived from Cica-Care, the medical silicone scar-treatment dressing. The word migrated into K-beauty around 2018 to describe products focused on the calming/repair mechanism of centella asiatica.

Madecassoside — the primary triterpene compound most cica creams are marketed around. Reduces inflammation, supports collagen synthesis, calms erythema (redness). Effective concentration: 0.1-2% depending on formulation.

Other triterpenes — asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassic acid. These are the "TECA" (Titrated Extract of Centella Asiatica) complex when combined. Some cica creams list this as their active.

Whole centella extract — plant material with all four triterpenes plus dozens of minor compounds. Broader-spectrum but lower concentration of the specific calming actives.

Legitimate cica formulations publish either the madecassoside % or TECA % on the ingredient list or product page. Decorative cica formulations just list "Centella Asiatica Extract" and call it cica in the marketing.

The Six Korean Cica Creams

1. Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule Cream

The Reddit-anointed cica cream in the US market. Whole-plant Madagascar centella extract as the lead active, buffered with panthenol and hyaluronic acid. About $22.

Best for: sensitive combination skin, rosacea-adjacent, first-time cica users. The texture is medium-light — one of the less 꾸덕한 (heavy) options in the category.

2. Round Lab Pine Cica Cream

The Pine Cica line specifically combines pine leaf extract with cica actives. Pine adds an antimicrobial secondary benefit that pure cica doesn't; the combination targets both inflammation and micro-bacterial imbalance on acne-prone skin.

Best for: combination-oily skin with occasional breakouts. About $26. Pair with the Pine Cica Toner Pad for compound effect.

3. Purito Centella Green Level Recovery Cream

The barrier-repair specialist. Purito's Green Level Recovery Cream focuses on the barrier-support use case — post-inflammation, post-acid-use, post-procedure. Fragrance-free, ceramide-supported cica formulation.

Best for: barrier-damaged skin recovering from over-exfoliation or aggressive routine. About $19.

4. COSRX Centella Blemish Cream

The acne-targeted cica pick. Combines centella actives with propolis for antimicrobial support against acne-related bacteria. Slightly thicker texture, spot-treatment-friendly.

Best for: active blemish areas, sensitive-skin acne management, night application. About $18. Widely available at Sephora US, Ulta.

5. VT Cosmetics Cica Pink Cream

The gentlest of the VT Cica line (VT does Pink, Blue, and Yellow variants for different intensities). Pink is the daily-wear calming version — moderate madecassoside, panthenol, ceramide complex.

Best for: sensitive combination skin, daily use, humid-climate summers where lighter textures matter. About $24.

6. Etude Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream

The clinical-tier pick. Etude's SoonJung line is dermatology-co-developed and pediatrician-safe. Panthenol + madecassoside + centella extract in a fragrance-free base. Not marketed as "cica" but functions as one.

Best for: highly reactive skin, eczema-adjacent, sensitive skin during flare weeks. About $20.

When Cica Doesn't Actually Deliver

Three misconceptions that Reddit and Naver threads keep clarifying.

Cica doesn't remove existing scars. Cica reduces the inflammation that CREATES scars and helps post-inflammatory redness (PIE) fade faster. It doesn't reduce depressed acne scars or surgical scars — those need clinical intervention (subcision, microneedling, laser).

Cica alone doesn't clear active acne. Cica calms the inflammation around acne. To clear acne itself, you need BHA (salicylic acid), benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, or clinical treatment. Cica is supportive, not primary.

"Cica" in a product name doesn't guarantee madecassoside content. If the brand doesn't publish the % or list TECA/madecassoside prominently in the ingredient list, treat the cica claim as marketing.

How to Layer Cica in a Routine

Cica pairs with almost everything (see the ingredient pairing rules for the framework).

Evening: cleanse → toner → essence → treatment serum (if any) → cica cream → optional occlusive.

Position matters: cica creams typically sit as the moisturizer step, not as a serum. If you have a lighter cica ampoule (like Skin1004's ampoule format), that sits earlier in the routine before your regular moisturizer.

Retinal + cica: excellent pairing. Cica buffers retinal reactivity; retinal drives cellular turnover. See the retinal cream framework for the multi-active approach.

What to Skip

Three patterns.

"Cica scar" creams claiming to erase existing scars. Marketing overreach. Cica doesn't reverse structural scarring.

Cica products with fragrance in the top 10 ingredients. Defeats the sensitive-skin purpose. Skin1004, Purito, and Etude Soon Jung all lead fragrance-free; VT and COSRX include mild scent.

Multiple cica products in the same routine. Cica ampoule + cica cream + cica mask = same active from three angles at token concentrations. Pick one cica product per routine, pair with non-cica supporting layers.

The Cica vs Mung Bean Question

Two Korean calming ingredient categories that come up together. See the mung bean vs centella deep-dive for the full comparison. Short answer: mung bean does cleansing-layer soothing; cica/centella does treatment-layer soothing. They're complementary, not competing.

Quick FAQ

Does cica cream actually fade dark spots?

Not directly. Cica reduces post-inflammatory erythema (PIE — the red marks) faster than baseline healing. For post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH — brown marks), niacinamide + tranexamic acid is the correct active pairing, not cica. See the PIE vs PIH framework in the niacinamide serum guide.

Can I use cica cream during a rosacea flare?

Yes — this is one of cica's strongest use cases. Skin1004, Purito, and Etude Soon Jung are the flare-appropriate picks (fragrance-free, gentle). Skip cica products with fragrance or essential oils during active flares.

Is cica safe for pregnancy?

Yes. Centella asiatica and its triterpenes are pregnancy-safe per most obstetric guidance. See the pregnancy-safe skincare framework.

What's the best cica cream for oily skin?

Round Lab Pine Cica (lighter texture + pine antimicrobial) or VT Cica Pink (medium-light). Skip Purito and COSRX (richer textures) if you tend oily.

How long until cica cream shows results?

Redness reduction visible in 1-2 weeks with consistent use. Post-acne mark (PIE) fading at 4-6 weeks. Barrier stability improvement compounds over 8+ weeks. Cica is faster-acting than most calming ingredients.

Are there cica products for the eye area?

Skin1004 makes a Madagascar Centella Ampoule that's eye-area safe. Most cica creams are safe around the eye area but not on the lid itself.
